Mākaro Press is a new publisher in Aotearoa New Zealand. We take our name from Mākaro Ward Island which is in Wellington harbour, just across from Eastbourne, where Mākaro Press is based. Mākaro and Matiu (the name of the other harbour island) were the nieces of the great explorer Kupe who came from Hawaiki to New Zealand.
Our first book is EASTBOURNE, an anthology of poetry, fiction and memoir, written by 90 authors about life in the eastern bays in Wellington – to be launched 5 December 2013. We are also working on a biography and poetry series. Under our Submarine imprint we have published a private memoir and a YA fantasy novel: Talisman of Vim by Robert Wainwright.
Publisher: Mary McCallum. Assistant publisher: Paul Stewart.
